Writing and Editing Services for Artists and the Art Industry

Hello, I’m Tanya, a freelance editor and writer for artists and arts professionals.

In the past 14 years, I taught English writing courses at universities and supported professionals and executives from various industries in their career advancement. All this time, my long-standing interest in the visual arts and cultural institutions informed my travels and learning about art history.

If you are an artist, curator, art historian, publishing professional, art collector, gallery owner, art dealer, or an executive in the arts and culture industry, I can help tell your stories – with clarity and focus.

Having spent a large portion of my career listening intently to others, I’m committed to a customized, reliable, and confidential service in line with your goals.

My qualifications include:

✓ Copyediting, line editing, and translation experience in the humanities and art history for Rodovid Press and Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies
✓ Master of Arts in English Literature, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO, 2009
✓ Copyediting training (CDPB 102) from Ryerson University, Toronto, ON, 2017
✓ Member of College Art Association, ACES: The Society for Editing, and Career Professionals of Canada
✓ Experience in career services since 2014 and editing since 2009
✓ Professional fluency in French and Ukrainian

I write web content, applications, proposals, and bio materials for artists.

I copyedit texts in art history and various documents for arts organizations, including reports, newsletters, catalogs, and web copy.

I work as a resume writer and career coach with job applicants at all career levels.

Email me at tanya@tm-editorial.com. Please include the main objectives for your project and the approximate deadlines. I will respond in 2-4 business days to schedule an introductory call or describe our next steps.

Trusting someone to write about your art project is an important step in your career advancement. Your writer works closely and collaboratively with you in the service of your audiences—be it arts organizations and funds, potential employers, or visitors to your artist website.

Your art writer should be an attentive listener, able to guide you with specific questions where necessary to help clarify your direction, articulate your goals, and finalize clear messages for your readers. I make good use of our phone session(s) and revisions to gauge your key messages and expectations.

I offer copywriting for artists and art websites, email copywriting, grant writing for artists and arts organizations, artwork descriptions, artist statements, artist bios, and art exhibition and project proposal writing. For organizations, I can assist with web content writing, newsletters, reports, and other project materials. I can also develop Language Style Guides to ensure consistency for future communications. Each project is unique, and I invite you to email me at tanya@tm-editorial.com for a customized quote.

Email me at tanya@tm-editorial.com. I offer a free, 15-minute introductory session to discuss your goals and my services.

When you sign up for a specific service (art project copywritingeditingresume writing, or career consulting), I will clarify the type of phone consultation that is included in each package. Usually, the goal of a phone consultation is to gather specific information about your work for the first draft, discuss your goals in detail, and share strategic insights that could help you move forward.

Career Coaching is customized for your immediate career needs and can cover topics like job search, networking, career transitions, interviewing, professional development, company and salary research, online branding, and more. I may send you questions or worksheets to help you crystalize your core questions before the session, so we can make the best use of our time.

If you have other questions about your writing or career direction or need additional edits/changes after the project has been completed, I offer consulting sessions.

30-min consulting session: $50
60-min consulting session: $90

All resume packages include a phone consultation (up to 45 min) and a cover letter. Costs range from $395 USD for entry-level to $795 USD for executive-level documents. For an exact quote, please email your current resume, salary requirements, and 1-3 links to desired job descriptions to tanya@tm-editorial.com.

Depending on the scope of work and deadline, copyediting services range from $0.04 to $0.07 USD per word.

I work to accommodate your deadlines and offer rush packages, if necessary. Depending on the length of the project, it can be finalized anywhere from 5-7 business days to several weeks after you have submitted materials.

I specialize in line and copyediting for various art-related materials, from art history publications to web copy. Some authors need developmental editing (content editing to improve line of argument and structure) and proofreading (the final stage of the publication process, following copyediting and text layout completed by designers). I can help identify professionals who provide these services.

Line (stylistic) editing improves flow, coherence, logic, clarity, tone, and style. It includes:

  • eliminating wordiness
  • revising word choice (clichés, jargon, ambiguities, or potentially offensive terms)
  • rewriting sentences or paragraphs for logical connections
  • ensuring smooth transitions between sentences or paragraphs
  • reordering sentences where applicable for better coherence
  • retaining the author’s voice while maintaining a consistent tone
  • adjusting the length of sentences or paragraphs
  • revising sentence structure for clarity and variety

Copyediting is editing for clarity, grammatical correctness, and consistency of style and facts. It includes:

  • checking grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage
  • ensuring completeness of material and querying for missing information
  • establishing consistency of style (abbreviations, numbers, and visual elements)
  • checking items for accuracy (names, quotations, facts, and citations)

I copyedited translated essays on art history for Rodovid Press and translated a monograph (1,000+ manuscript pages) on ethnography/oral history for the University of Alberta Press. Let’s discuss your book project. If I am not the right fit, I may be able to help identify the right editorial professional among fellow members of Editors Canada, ACES: The Society for Editing, or Editorial Freelancers Association.

I listen intently and we work together to make sure your audience gets the highest quality message. I support your goals with the skills you need for a particular project. As a conscientious, research-focused writer and editor, I am committed to confidentiality, deadlines, responsiveness, clarity, and efficiency.

Writing with Artists is a broad writing, editing, and career services practice for the arts industry. I bring together my long-standing interest in the arts and my skills in writing and career coaching to assist clients in various creative industries.

I work with gallery owners, art dealers, art educators, curators, art historians, museum professionals and executives, designers, creative directors, marketing professionals, and more.

If you work in the arts and need help with words, I offer my expertise in writing and my understanding of creative processes.

Yes, I can guide you as you write your admissions and personal essays. I cannot write them for you, but if you need to talk through your motivation, direction, and differentiators to stand out among other applicants, I can help.

I have worked in career services since 2014, as a resume writer and later on as a career coach. This industry is not strictly regulated, and you may find professionals offering resume editing or writing services that focus strictly on the resume text.

I start with career strategy: we talk about your goals and past achievements, and align them together to position you for your desired roles. This involves an in-depth conversation about your career to date and a subsequent resume rewrite.

I emphasize that the resume is not the only component of your career development journey. It is simply meant to get you the interviews you want. Outside of the resume’s function, we talk about other tools of a successful job applicant: job search strategy, salary research and negotiations, networking, interviewing, and personal brand (the alignment of your professional presentation on paper, in person, and online).

My goal is to teach you the tools that can help you be the referred candidate, use your network to land better jobs, and be findable online by potential employers.

“Tanya recently finished a long translation project on my behalf going from Ukrainian to English. It took nearly a year to complete because there was so much to do. Her work on this project was superb. She submitted to me all translations in a timely manner. I would, and likely will, ask her to work on other projects with me.” —William Noll, the author of Transformation of Civil Society. An Oral History of Ukrainian Peasant Culture of the 1920s–1930s
